A Semester in Australia! What have I done???

kangaroo

Alright. I guess I will write something about the crazy week I’ve had. Last Sunday, I boarded a flight to Australia. I have now been here for about 5 days. There are so many things here that are different. For one, food and booze are way more expensive here than back home. Also, the sidewalks actually matter here… no shortcuts around them because the grass is always soggy. I walked across a football field at the park today and by the time I got to the mall, it looked like I just walked through a wet vegetable garden. My feet were covered in mud. Another thing is the humidity– great for the skin, great for the sinuses, but not so great for an ASUS computer touchpad. Needless to say, I had to buy a mouse for my computer the other day. There are these ferns here that just grow on the trees like weeds:

Pretty cool to see things just growing like that. I apologize for the poor photo quality– my camera battery doesn’t hold up for too long and I can’t use my phone here so I’m stuck with an iPod touch.

They don’t have ketchup here and what they call hot dogs here actually taste like sausage… much better than our trashy hot dogs. But another thing is that even though I have a slight advantage for the currency conversion, the food costs almost twice as much as back home. I think I’m losing weight like an actual starving artist. To add to it, I don’t have a car here (which is really inconvenient) so I walk just about everywhere unless I can figure out the bus system. The campus is half an hour walk from downtown Lismore, so shopping and having to walk that far isn’t an easy task. A taxi costs $18 one way to get to or from campus. I definitely can’t afford that.

Aside from the cost of living and a few bumps along the way, it’s pretty cool to be here. The walk to town cuts through an original rain forest remnant that the town left untouched. The birds are bright and colorful and the humidity allows all sorts of things to just grow like weeds. The koalas are cute from a distance, the trees smell fabulous, and I get to see at least one cool fungus while I’m walking to and from ordinary places every day:

This is a member of the stinkhorn family, and trust me, I can definitely smell them when I pass by… yuck. But they look really cool 🙂

So far, I haven’t had a chance to set up studio. I’m waiting until I can get back in the art building and talk to my new professor. She told me that there is a space saved for me already, but I don’t know where it’s at yet. Also, since I didn’t think to pack my respirator, I had to order one online and it hasn’t been confirmed as to whether it’s coming here yet or not. I also have to get a guitar here… there’s no Netflix and the studio is only open for limited hours and I need special permission to go there on weekends, so I’m gonna need something to keep be busy at home. If I like the guitar enough, I might try to ship it by boat with the rest of my pots to go back home.

Cheers!

Into the Wild Down Under!

rainforest

The anticipation is starting. I leave for Australia in just 16 days. My whole world will be turned upside down. Literally! And I can’t wait. I finally have almost all of the details in order. I’m gonna be spending the semester in the wild down under. I can barely wrap my head around what to expect. I know it will be wet and cold when I get there, but that makes opportunity for things to grow that I’ve never seen in real life before. I still can’t believe it. I’ve always wanted to go there and see what it’s like, but I never knew about the rainforest side of the continent until about a year ago. It just made me want to go even more. What’s best about it is that I will be totally and completely in my element while there– ceramic studio, herbal medicine class, surrounded by rainforest, close to the beach, and the people will be different, too.

eucalyptus

I think I’m just realizing how quickly the trip is coming up. Back when it was a month or two away, it was just sort of a cool idea. Now it’s so close that I can smell the eucalyptus trees. Four months is longer than I’ve ever traveled somewhere before. College is close to home, and my travel experience boils down to a few family vacations.

What I’m the most excited about is hiking there. I know I can’t make too big of expectations, but I know the climate, plants, and atmosphere will be different. I know that there are orchids growing near where I will be, and they have a huge rainforest reserve just a few miles from campus. I want to go exploring and find new imagery to be inspired to put on my work.

Photos Photos Photos! Oh, these Colorful pots of mine…

red and blue passion tumblers

I am seriously so excited about all of my newest pieces! I just took another round of photos from my final firing when the semester ended, and they are bright, happy, and vibrant! I feel like my pots are finally full of life and reflect my own personal expression. It’s the best feeling in the world. I love to draw, I love color, and I LOVE tropical plants. Actually, I love most plants… and they make the most intriguing imagery 🙂 This is the first set of tumblers to have color inlaid inside another color: red inside blue. I decided to add this photo to represent that it was a successful idea, and that it spurred a whole new way of thinking about decorating and drawing for me. Here are more photos!

The End of roommates, and the beginning of SUMMER!

BFA Studio Spring 2013 026

The semester is officially over. I have to be completely moved out of my apartment in 3 hours. Well, dorm, I should say. I’m just glad to leave it behind. 8:30pm isn’t coming around fast enough. I’ve got most of my stuff already in my car. I just have a few last things to pack up. I haven’t been feeling great lately, so I will probably pay for running up and down the stairs all day and carrying heavy boxes. I should feel better in a week– when all will be somewhat calmer. I won’t have classes or roommates to get in the way of enjoying a month of summer before I leave to Australia. I am going to settle into a new place by Monday, and I will get back to work in the studio. I already have a whole bunch of new pots to take photos of! I can’t keep up with myself.

The cups in the photo above are among a few of the first designs. I kept them pretty simple. I need to think up something that I want to enter into the “Strictly Functional” exhibition. The deadline is coming up soon… 😛

Simple things can make me happiest! New mugs!

new cups 04-13

How many times does it take to learn

You gain nothing from bridges burned?

In the heat of the moment, rage lets loose

In a future day it could be your noose.

So walk your own way and smile anyway–

Nothing will change you unless you let it.

Hold your tongue and dot your “i”s,

Keep on going and soon you’ll get it.

Forward pacing, no time for retracing,

Get caught up in what you’re facing.

Time to let go, time to move on

Something better is coming, the worst is gone.

Steps lead up to doors and hallways,

Windows open to see the sky.

Life is your perspective, it is what you see–

So step lightly, look outside, and get free.

Sun slowly changes the light in me

I can feel it like a tidal wave, tenuously.

Sweet summer sunshine, sweet green leaves

Energy arises, something I can believe.

So take your time when the weather’s nice,

No rush in where you’re going, take my advice.

Tolerate the woes of daily life

Because you know the sun will shine.

The sun shines! So be happy! Lately, I’ve had my own flaws… I complain a bit too much when I forget the good and simple things in life. So try not to forget them. They are what really matters– sunshine outside, green grass and leaves, birdsong, light out the window, a simple sincere hug, the opportunity to learn and walk away unscathed with something to show for it. The small things and whether you appreciate them are what can determine your quality of life. If you think about it, simple little things are the best things. I felt overjoyed when I opened my kiln this morning and peeked inside at these little pots (photo at top). I was grinning almost the entire time I was unloading. That has never happened with a firing for me until today. I am grateful for the few perfect little pieces the kiln gave me. I have a lot more than what’s in this photo, but they wouldn’t all fit 🙂

Color, color, color!

BFA Studio Spring 2013 044

So my new vibrant color at cone 10 started with this whimsical mug, and now I’ve created a whole new realm of surface possibilities with what I found. My newest idea is to mix different metallic oxides into my magnesium satin matte glaze to create different colors to contrast with the color windows– I mixed 2% copper carbonate into the base white glaze yesterday and fired a kiln today… so hopefully tomorrow I can see my results 🙂 I might try to take a snapshot of the open kiln before I unload it… but here are a few more photos from this shoot:

Heliconia Cereal Bowl

Heliconia Cereal Bowl with magnesium satin matte glaze fired to cone 11 in oxidation with 0.3% chrome oxide. This is one of my favorite pieces of the new batch so far– the color combo is vibrant, the glaze is smooth, non-crazing, and reflects light in a soft and inviting way. The back side got a little uneven reduction so it went a little bluish.

Orange and Red flower mug

The other mug that helped start it all. This black glaze prefers to be fired to about cone 8… so it’s tricky to not over fire it with my magnesium matte pots in the same kiln. Firing in oxidation tends towards the top half of the kiln to be cooler, so I’ve evolved to placing black glazed pots up top. And I use black glaze on taller pieces for that reason. I’m so excited to see my kiln load tomorrow! The firing went surprisingly smooth. It put itself into body reduction, so I had to pull it out (to fire in oxidation) but after that it was smooth sailing and I finished it in 7 hours. That big kiln usually takes 11-15 hours. I hope I didn’t go too fast…

Passionate for color: The finished work

Passion Tumblers

These are a couple of my newest finished pieces– Passion tumblers. I finally got around to photographing my finished work. There will be more to come! But this is just a peek at my latest success 😉

Things are coming together nicely, I think. I am splashing color on every piece, then I wax and carve in line drawings, and fill them with a different color. There are some complications when planning a firing since I work this way– I use a lot of wax. I use it in the making stage, and I have to reapply it on the color panel at the bisque stage before glazing. That means that I go through wax almost like I drink my tea! Anyway, I was planning on firing a kiln this week, but there were scheduling conflicts and on the day when I decided I would just load it up and fire it, I found out that I was completely out of wax, but my bisqued pots weren’t all waxed. It was enough of the pots that I wouldn’t have been able to justify firing such a big kiln. So I gave up for the day and ordered more wax online. And now, even though I was given wax yesterday, I haven’t had time to glaze my pots and load a kiln because I had to clean and arrange pots for our giant studio sale. It is such a crazy week! But I am thinking about firing on Sunday. We’ll see. For now, here’s some more finished work! 🙂

In your face color, on a new tropical level!

bottles

These are some of my newest pieces… with my newest colors! I finally used them on some bottles. From left to right: Passionflower, Calypso Orchids, and just some different orchids.

I’m excited that inlaying color within color is working… soon I will photograph work when I have enough successful pots to justify setting up to take photos. For now, you can enjoy the brightly colored previews! 🙂

Passion for passion: color inlay inside color

Passion Tumblers

Passion Tumblers!

Of course, these aren’t fired yet, but the colors stay pretty true. I glazed and loaded them in a kiln this morning… I finished firing at around 7:00pm. Hopefully I will be able to unload tomorrow after work 🙂 These are new because I tried using my colored underglaze to fill in the inlay cracks… I’m a bit nervous about how that will work out…

heliconia cereal bowl

Heliconia Cereal Bowl! I made two of them, but the photo looked better with just one. And the other one isn’t an exact match… I’m still working on figuring out my new bowl form– the clay is particularly tricky to work with because it’s mostly grolleg kaolin and feldspar. Apparently there’s not much feldspar separating my clay from being a glaze! Needless to say, trimming is a bitch. I have to trim them while they are still pretty soft to prevent deep chattering, so it warped the inside of a couple of my bowls. The clay type is important because I like how my glazes look on grolleg porcelain, and it gives me the option of creating highlights by carving through the colors to the bare white clay. I have thought about switching out some of the Grolleg for Helmar and adding a small amount of ball clay. My reclaimed porcelain is much more workable than my untouched clay.

I just got some new underglaze colors in the mail, and they are blindingly bright! I can’t wait to plaster my pots with them 😀

Breaking the creativity barrier with color- Paradise Tumblers!

paradise

Paradies Tumblers!

Colored underglaze inlay through other colored underglaze layers… I hope it works out in the firing!

I feel like a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders for now… no more litigation crap for a while… I can see light at the end of the tunnel! For now, I can have normal fickle worries like roommate drama and boys. It’s refreshing to not be under a black veil of anxiety… and it might start showing in my work. I feel like I’ve been trying to stretch my own boundaries already, but now that I feel a little more light-hearted I just might break my own creativity barrier. These tumblers express what I want to be doing– drawing tropical things that intrigue me on the surface of a strong form. I made a new rib in tool making that helps me get the bottom curve just right. I call it my “magic rib”, because it really does seem like a magic trick. The crazy part is that I didn’t even plan on it making such a difference… I wasn’t making these forms when I made the rib to begin with, but it makes a huge difference in how quickly I’m able to achieve that curve.
