Lonely People

Alright, I’ve been in a writing lull lately, but last night I wrote a cool chord progression accompanied by a melody with my Johnson Delta Resonator guitar, and tonight I’ve been brainstorming some good lyrics. I’ve been thinking a lot about the lonely people that come into the yogurt shop I work at, the people that sit alone at cafes, and the bored-to-death people that used to come into the health food store and wreak havoc for entertainment where I used to work. I realized that it’s scary how much I can relate to some of the crazy people when I feel lonely two thousand miles away from everything I’ve ever known. It inspired me to start writing some really personal lyrics about loneliness and how it’s not always a bad thing, but I’m sure a few people can relate to the words, even if they only admit it to themselves. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Lonely people wait outside their cars

Lonely people drive, they don’t care how far

There is peace in silence, if they can find it

They won’t see it through their solitary confinement.

Lonely people sit and repent at home

They soak in their guilt and medicate alone.

Lonely people stare out at the moon at night,

Wondering how far away the stars are that shine.

They crawl in bed and wait for sleep

But it doesn’t come until way past three.

Lonely people keep their phones nearby

They call a friend far away hoping the time is right.

When they wake up they walk to cafés

Hoping just to meet a friendly face.

Lonely people eat just to fill the void

Left by all their worries and blank Polaroids.

They read the news just to try to get involved

In the world that swallows their problems whole and unresolved.

I want to write heart-wrenching, emotion-ripping, uncomfortably personal lyrics as opposed to the cute happy jazzy songs I’ve been writing by default lately. I think this is a start. To be continued…

Finished work in Massachusetts

2014 fall pots 071

I finally took some proper images of my finished work. This is my “amoeba” teapot design. If you like what you see, it’s totally available for sale on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/KirasPotshop

Anyway, I’m really happy with how my work has been turning out with my new clay body, decorating, and glazing techniques. The really cool part is that glazing isn’t a total pain. I think I’m addicted to spray bottles. I use them for everything, and find new uses at least once a week. I now use a spray bottle to “glaze” my pots– I just add a thin layer of flux to the surface to make it smoother to the touch, but it doesn’t drown out or dilute my fabulous colors.

Just the other day, I decided to use a spray bottle with watered down gel as a more eco-friendly and less expensive/smelly version of hair spray. It works awesomely. I’m thinking about using a clean spray bottle for olive oil for when I make pizza crusts– I have a pizza recipe where the dough isn’t aloud to get soggy underneath all of the delicious sauce and veggies, thanks to a barrier of olive oil. Anyway, spray bottles have completely changed and down-sized my way of working to a point where I feel like it would be all too easy to set up a home studio and keep making the same work as I do now. I haven’t been doing much wheel throwing lately, but here’s a couple of nice bud vases:

(these bud vases aren’t on Etsy yet, but soon could be 😉

2014 fall pots 040

I’ve been entranced by drawing different leaf types, from polemonium to willow to eucalyptus to gingko. I’m definitely gonna keep rolling with it!

Teapot, Teapot, Teapot Tuesday.

10621819_10204741002793095_1379222417_n

Alright, I know this page has been sitting quietly for while now. That’s because I’ve been hunkering down in the studio making teapots and other cool new stuff like crazy. I had a whole kiln load of teapots that destroyed themselves (luckily it was a small kiln, and the casualties measured six teapots dead). Making six teapots is still a lot of work to just throw away after the firing. I have a teapot graveyard on my top shelf in the studio. They all split their sides and/or the handle detached and slumped. I’ve had much better luck since I’ve started working with a lighter colored stoneware clay (the teapot above is what the new clay body looks like before it dries out).

I’m really loving this new teapot design that I came up with, so I just keep making them. It’s a soft squared body with a gallery seated cut-out lid, a pulled loop handle over the top, and an intricate strainer like I’ve been taught to make over the last four years hides inside where the spout attaches. The spout is wheel thrown because I like the way it flows with the rest of the soft shape. I recently got this new turquoise underglaze in the mail, and it’s fabulous! I test fired it a few days ago and it came out a little more saturated than it looks in the picture above. I thought that maybe it would burn out or be a completely different color, but it turns out that I hit the jackpot with Laguna’s “blue-green” underglaze. It fires to cone 10, fluxes out a little bit, and stays better than true to color. I think I am in love with it. Oh, and it was under $20 for a pint of the stuff, so ya know… I’m pretty stoked.

And last but not least, is my attempt at designing an appropriate teacup shape to go with the squarish teapots I’ve been making. I also dipped back into my orchid obsession for this tea set. I decided to draw in the stem for the teapot, to make it a little more detailed than in the past (I just sharpened my tool before decorating so I was able to get really fine lines). Post-firing, this teapot will be a beautiful saturated red fading to bright orange. Who knows, maybe it will be worthy enough to enter into a tea exhibition show…

In other, non-ceramic news, I got a second job outside of the studio. I now work at a frozen yogurt lounge for a good part of the week (usually 25 hours+). The not so fun part about it is that I work nights and have to close up at the end of the day. Depending on customer flow, I don’t get home until 10:30 on week nights and 12:00am on weekends. I guess they are going to shorten the hours after the leaf peepers leave town. I’ve never had a job where I make tips before– they really add up. I took a whole bunch of coins to the bank this morning and it added up to over $70. That’s just from people ditching their coins in my tip jar cuz they don’t wanna carry them. Oh well, I found out that I don’t even need to sort them. There’s just an 8% fee to use the machine. Guess I have a little extra spending money now 😛

First Glaze Firing in Great Barrington

10634373_10204521737991612_625309973_n

It is soooo nice to have Skutt kilns in the studio that can actually achieve cone 10. Yes, electric firing is convenient, but I also miss manually firing gas kilns just for the experience. My work just looks way better in clean oxidation, so it’s good to fire them in electric kilns if I can get it to temperature. I will be firing gas kilns in reduction for class work and I might throw in a few celadon glazed pots, but I don’t see myself making a whole kiln load of reduction fired work. I’ve decided to try and take more time on my pots since I don’t have a steady selling outlet. I’ve been making teapots this week, which take forever. I can’t wait to get some teapots fired and put them in my Etsy shop 🙂

The pots from this firing look good for the most part, but none of the spoons survived, unfortunately. I got some nice scoops out of the kiln, though. I’ve decided that I really like to carve white lines for the illustrations– it’s soft but also has good contrast with the right colors. Most of the things I wanted to turn out green in this firing all went kind of yellow, and the purple inlay on the bird bowl burnt out almost completely. It was supposed to be a dark maroon, so maybe I will try firing just a tad cooler next time. Anyway, I am super happy that the Skutt can fire hot! 🙂

Leaves and Flowers and Brilliant COLORS!

10602928_10204516075170045_1843811171_n

Good morning from here in my quaint little basement apartment in the beautiful town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. I guess my last post didn’t really say much about the Berkshires, but right now everything I do is “in the Berkshires”. I’ve been busy in the studio lately. Soon, the problem of where to put all of the pots will be a very real problem. I’ve slowed down a bit and I am making teapots since I haven’t made them for a while and they usually sell well on Etsy. I came up with a new squarish teapot design (there is a photo of it in the post titled “Life in the Berkshires”) that I’m really attached to. I’ve already made two more of a similar shape and design, and I started another one yesterday. I walked into a couple of places downtown the other day and asked if they did artist consignment. I walked into a gallery with a sub-label of “Contemporary Craft”, where I saw pots on pedestals through the window. When I walked inside, I immediately recognized Ellen Grenadier’s work on display. I actually agreed to help her in her studio for 3 hours every other week, so I mentioned her name when I walked up to the counter. I asked if they ever took on new artists, and the owner told me that she did and “Your work must be good if you’re assisting Ellen, send me an email with photos and a link to your website.”

Who knows, maybe something will come of it. First, I’ve gotta tackle the new photo setup here. I will hopefully be unloading a glaze kiln tonight or tomorrow morning with some tasty fresh pots. I’ve got a bunch of aspen leaf bowls that I’m contemplating taking photos of for the gallery.

I’ve jumped on the ‘scoops’ bandwagon. They are just so adorable, easy to make, and I can think of a bunch of uses for them at home. I need a new coffee scoop anyway 🙂 not to mention larger scoops will be great for measuring rice (I’ve been using a coffee cup as a scoop for a few weeks here now). I’ve also been thinking about baking ware, like muffin tins. I’m having a lot of workability issues with my clay right now though, so I should probably get that figured out first.

Life in the Berkshires

10617371_10204478880080191_287291573_n

It seems as though the summer mushroom season is tapering off here. I haven’t been finding too many chanterelles and not a single lobster in the last couple of weeks. Just a lot of inedible coral fungi and a few slug-eaten painted boletes. It has been a little colder for the last couple of weeks than I heard it has been here. The fireflies have also become sparse. I guess it’s a good thing I’ve got stuff in the studio to keep me busy right now. I unloaded a small bisque yesterday, and I plan on glazing the pots today and hopefully loading them into a cone ten firing electric kiln so that I can have pots by tomorrow afternoon (maybe).

I want to take a couple of them with me downtown to some art shops and small galleries and ask if they do consignment with artists like myself. I need to get some sort of selling basis going here. Also, I need to figure out the imaging setup here so I can list new pots in my Etsy shop 🙂

Anyway, my work is still ever changing. I have been going on an aspen leaf drawing spree lately:

Project #JailhouseArtDemo

10521217_10204114282645483_329083740_n

ProjectJailhouse Art Demo was a success, by the way. The educational instructor at the jail even asked me for photos of me working and presenting afterwards to put in the county newsletter. It was an awesome experience, with a great bunch of animated and friendly bunch of inmates. I guess I can officially say that I’m abadass now since I gave an art lecture at a jail 😛

I showed them a slideshow of images of my work, explained some basic history about ceramics, talked about firing technology a bit, touched on the subjects of clay and glaze calculation, and explained the basic making methods. I thought it went really well. They were so curious, they just kept asking questions and I had fun answering them. The lecture ended up lasting almost an hour longer than I had planned for, but I wasn’t uncomfortable the whole time. Afterwards, one of the inmates even came up to me and told me how composed and relaxed I was while I was talking. I guess I didn’t do too bad for my first lecture, especially considering my stage fright that usually gets me.

My first yellow chanterelles! :)

massachusetts woods 063

Ok, so there is a side of me that is obsessed with looking for mushrooms in the woods. When I find a treat like this, I can’t help but feel ecstatic! Chanterelles are easy to identify with their pseudo gills running down a funnel shaped stalk and their frilly cap margins. I found a tiny red chanterelle a couple of days ago, but they are so small and so few that people don’t bother collecting them for food. I found the perfect hillside for chanterelles today. They weren’t entirely “abundant”, but they seemed to like the area. I picked a few, left a few. I still haven’t tasted them just yet, but they are patiently waiting in my fridge. In the meantime, I’ve still been finding the delicious black trumpet chanterelles every day. I had some with pasta for lunch, and some with chicken for dinner tonight. I guess I’m pretty spoiled to be able to find free top-notch mushrooms every time I go for a walk.

A Bit Scattered

Alright, so I kind of had a rough arrival into Massachusetts, what with missing my exit, having to drive an extra hour to get back to the exit, landing in the wrong town on the wrong road, and now my phone is dead. It stopped working around noon yesterday, and I haven’t been able to get it to turn on. I even tried putting it on the charger and putting it in a bag of rice to try and relieve the water damage from my walk. I decided to buy a new phone online today after I gave up. My phone still won’t turn on. Also, one of the cats peed on my couch downstairs, which I’m told is really unusual behavior. I’m house sitting for the year and taking care of two black cats. The owners of the house and the cats seem fairly friendly. They said that they set up an appointment with a pet communicator to try and see why Cubby “acted out.” I don’t know if I believe in that kind of thing, but they are convinced it will work. Anyway, it’s a bit of a drag to have a couch that smells like cat pee.

Since my phone is dead, it takes more planning to take pictures. I found three beautiful ramaria fungus specimens, but when I tried to use my camera, of course the battery was dead. I will charge it tonight and try to find the ramaria again tomorrow. Here’s a picture of the white Indian pipe plant. It’s actually really common here:

I met my boss at the studio today and he showed me around, telling me that I would have the keys to every door in the building, once my paperwork goes through. I’m even going to have an office and a section of the studio to call mine. Hopefully it will be a wonderful year. Just gotta make better friends with the cats…

I guess I didn’t really post many photos of what I was working on back in Utah. Here’s a photo of some of my newest glazed and fired cups:

Great Barrington, MA!

Hey everyone, I made it! It only took me 4 1/2 days and 4 motels to drive across the country to my new job as a ceramic studio technician. Things are already so different here. First off, they have fireflies at night. Secondly, there is wine and hard liquor in grocery stores. 3rdly, it’s green and it actually rains here. Oh, and Great Barrington really is a unique little town. The cost of living is a bit more here, but still nothing like Australia. I am in LOVE with the forest already. Tonight, dinner was whole wheat fettuccine with a creamy sauce with chicken and sauteed black trumpet chanterelle mushrooms that I found in the woods this afternoon. It was divine. Oh, and Peggy made a wonderful apricot tart for dessert. Here is a snapshot of my first walk in the woods here:

10583155_10204298784777921_1346978207_n

There are ferns EVERYWHERE. Oh, and mushrooms like you wouldn’t believe. The mosquitoes are really bad, though. Today I wore a jacket to walk in the woods even though it was 80 degrees out just to keep them off me, but they just attacked my face more and my hands. They really are aggressive here.
